Teach Something About Personal Finance

After the successful run of our first peer teaching event Teach Something, we followed up quickly with the second trial within 2 weeks. While it was about startup in the first event, this time we focused on personal finance.

Teach Something #2 – Money Matters, Education First was held in Startup Hub, Sunway Mentari on 12th February 2015, in evening time after working hours. But the turnout was poor this time with only about 12 of us turned up compared to over 30 of us in the first event.

3 speakers were present to shared topics from Goods and Services Tax (GST), investment planning, to creating passive income stream. A 4th speaker took a detour and taught us about High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) that is being taught in schools.

The 4 speakers were:

  • What’s Up in GST by Danny Lim
  • Savings or Investments by Shinyi Tai
  • Passion vs Passive Income by Roger Kerk
  • High Order Thinking Skills by Poh Yew Teoh

Each speaker shared for about 18 minutes each. As the audience size was small, the sharing became more interactive compared to last event. Each speaker added value to the audience by building on what was shared by previous speaker.

Roger Kerk was credited as the best speaker of the day for his interesting sharing and personal experience on working on his passion and creating passive income stream, to now running networking group related to passive income opportunities.

Key Lessons

  • Instead of blaming low turnout to external factor, we should work on improving the attraction of the event.
  • An event doesn’t need a big group in order to be really useful and value-adding.

GST & Business Sharing in Klang

We organized out a demo event in Klang for the first time thanks to co-organizer Rosa Lui. She kindly helped to reserve seats with a restaurant in Bandar Baru Klang, and gather a group of business people.

To make the event more interesting, we invited Danny Lim, GST consultant from Brexson Consulting, to share latest updates on the implementation of consumption tax in Malaysia to the group.

The session on 22nd September 2014 was meant to be a Chinese-speaking event called 巴生商业交流会 – GST税税平安 (Klang Business Exchange – At Peace with GST). However, we started chatting in English for some new members, and ended up conducting the whole session in English!

The demo meeting started with each of us sharing about ourselves for 3 minutes each. All participants shared about their job, business, or simply about themselves. Some of them were prominent people in their own trades.

After listening to the elevator speeches, we voted for the best presenter among us. The featured speaker Danny Lim then took over and shared latest news on GST to the business group in Klang. He was well suited for the job, especially he has been speaking in various GST events including with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Klang.

Anthony Ng, the Executive Secretary of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship Malaysia (FGBMF-Malaysia), was selected by the group as the best presenter among all of us.

Anthony was invited to deliver a full presentation for another 10 minutes. He took the opportunity to inform and educate us about the plight of some aboriginal people in East Malaysia.

Despite a small group of only 11 of us, the session nevertheless successfully demonstrated what a typical Pitch ‘n’ Win event was like. We look forward to seeing more of you in Klang in future!

2nd Mastermind Group on GST

We started the first mastermind and group consulting session in July. Danny Lim of Brexson Consulting spoke and consulted a small group in a mastermind setting where all members could help and learn from one another.

The chargeable event for RM200 per pax was repeated on 26th August 2014 . The event called Pitch ‘n’ Mastermind #2 – Prepare For GST Strategy Together was scheduled at night in co-working space Trep Alley in Serdang.

The turnout this time was lower as only 3 participants joined the event. Nevertheless, the session started with Danny sharing on certain topics in GST for half an hour.

Unlike the first time, instead of repeating the basics of GST, this time Danny spoke on more intermediate and advanced topics in the upcoming consumption tax. The audio-visual facilities were also better thanks to Trep Alley.

After the talk, the 3 participants started to ask and discuss the questions and challenges pertaining to implementation of GST in their business. The discussion and problem-solving consultation took more than 2 hours.

In particular, we discussed at length on particular problems faced in the construction industry, including the tax chargeable and its timing  in subcontractor work.

The 3-hour session ended around 9:30pm. It was again a good learning experience from one another for businesses on GST. We wish more companies could join in and be benefited in future.
