Pitch ‘n’ Win Explained

The concept Pitch ‘n’ Win can be explained in 3 ways.

Firstly, Pitch ‘n’ Win is an event platform where all can join, speak up, share about their business and ideas, connect to one another, judge the presentations and vote for the best presenters.

The 2 core elements in each Pitch ‘n’ Win event are pitching and winning. The pitching is not limited to pitching to investors, but much wider than that to include all kinds of sharing depending on the theme of the particular event.

Everyone can join Pitch ‘n’ Win events for free. Participants might need to pay for drink or dinner if the event is held in a restaurant. But we charge neither entrance fee nor membership fee. Everyone can come and everyone can go.

Secondly, Pitch ‘n’ Win is an open-source event model which individuals and businesses can adopt to organize their own version of Pitch ‘n’ Win event to benefit their own target group of people and add value to their business or themselves.

One who joins as a Pitch ‘n’ Win event organizer can freely copy the event model and adapt to his or her own needs. He just needs to abide by certain minimal requirements, such as keeping the pitching + gamification elements. On top of that, organizers can freely innovate to add more value and wow into the event.

The so-called Pitch ‘n’ Win events are actually owned by individual event organizers. Both Pitch ‘n’ Win and the individual organizers were independent parties and one does not come under another. However, we just agree to come together to collaborate for a certain event based on Pitch ‘n’ Win event model.

Thirdly, Pitch ‘n’ Win is a social movement to empower the people to take the stage and share their own things. There are already many events where people attend to listen, but not as many events where people attend to speak up. We are helping to turn this around so that everyone is given free opportunities to share something. After all, sharing one’s own things is a need of everyone. Pitch ‘n’ Win is where each one of us can be satisfied in an orderly manner.

The Origin of Pitch ‘n’ Win

Pitch ‘n’ Win is a brainchild of Ricky Soo, who had been organizing small-group events for friends and clients. He is the owner of BizPartner, which has been providing domain name, web and email hosting and Internet consulting to businesses since 2005.

In March 2012, Ricky Soo founded BookPeckers and had been organizing monthly book sharing events for the public. Together with other team members, BookPeckers was quite successful. This gave a lot of early exposure to Ricky who never organized such events before.

In early 2013, Ricky started to organize Business Sharing Over Dinner (BSOD) monthly events for his clients where everyone could gather, listen to an expert speak on an IT topic, and share about their businesses. BSOD had a great start in the beginning, but the attendance dwindled in a few months until Ricky had to get friends to fill up the seats.

Facing the challenge, Ricky started to think of another event model. He remembered what he had learned about gamification. He asked, “Why not make the whole event a game?” Then Ricky designed the Pitch ‘n’ Win event model where event participants share their business for 3 minutes each, and altogether the group vote for top two presenters, who will then be given 15 minutes each to elaborate on their pitch.

The first Pitch ‘n’ Win event was organized as a BizPartner event on 13th July 2013 in Zest Cafe, Bangsar South. Over 20 people attended, 8 members pitched their business, and 2 winners were selected. The response was overwhelming. The first event was a great success.

Thanks to encouragement from Ong Beng Chung, the owner of Zest Cafe, Ricky decided to carry on organizing Pitch ‘n’ Win events. Later, he decided to spin off Pitch ‘n’ Win as his company’s event to an independent organization.

Pitch ‘n’ Win was so borned on 13th July 2013.
